The UT College of Veterinary Medicine (UTCVM), located in Knoxville, was established by an act of the Tennessee Legislature in 1974 and is part of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture.
UTCVM is one of 33 veterinary colleges in the United states and provides opportunities for Tennessee students while serving pet owners and the livestock industry as well as protecting public health, enhancing medical knowledge and generating economic benefits to the state and nation.

The Avian and Exotics and Zoological Hospital at the University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Centers John and Ann Tickle Small Animal Hospital is staffed by veterinarians who are board-certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners or the American College of Zoological Medicine, by veterinary residents, licensed veterinary technicians, and 4th-year veterinary students. Together, we provide state-of-the-art medical care for exotic and zoological species including pet birds and backyard poultry, ferrets, rabbits, and rodents (e.g. guinea pigs, hamsters, chinchillas, rats, and reptiles). Our faculty are responsible for the healthcare of the animals at the Knoxville Zoological Gardens, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Service, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, The American Eagle Foundation and Tiger Haven, a sanctuary for large cats. Our specialists also provide consultation and care for animals of the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga and the Ripley's Aquarium in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
Our team works closely with other faculty in the Veterinary Medical Center who are board-certified specialists in radiology, ophthalmology, cardiology, surgery, oncology and neurology to provide the highest level of care possible for all our patients. In addition to providing advanced monitoring and hospitalization for critical patients, we also are equipped to perform advanced diagnostic and surgical procedures for all exotic and zoological species. Our diagnostic laboratory services have an international reputation for excellence and expertise in avian and exotic species laboratory testing.
