Services We Provide
- Grooming and boarding – We provide boarding and grooming services for your dog or cat. Some of our grooming services include nail trimming, baths, shaving, and more. Our boarding services include daily meals, vet monitoring, playtime, and much more. Your pet will love it here!
- Spaying and neutering – We provide spaying and neutering services for your new pets. Spaying and neutering can reduce levels of aggression in your pets as well as greatly reduce or eliminate many reproductive issues and diseases. Spaying and neutering also help reduce animal overpopulation.
- Vaccinations – Vaccinations are incredibly important for your pet’s health. Your pet should come in once a year to receive their rabies and other vaccinations as well as medications for heartworm. Our veterinarian will track your pet’s vaccinations and update them when necessary.
- Dental care – Dental care is a priority for your pet. We deep clean your pet’s teeth and gums. We also examine your pet’s mouth to check for gum disease, rotten teeth, and any other dental issues.
- Imaging services – We have an in-house x-ray machine to check for any broken bones or muscle tears as well as a radiology clinic to look for any issues involving your pet’s organs.
- Large animal services – Our bovine and equine services include hoof trims, teeth cleaning, castration, and vaccinations. Our building includes a full-service barn so we can treat large animals safely and effectively. We also treat pigs, sheep, and goats.

Our practice has a unique history. Founded by Dr. Ted Shope and Dr. Jay Carter, partners of Southern Veterinary Associates, Bayou South Animal Hospital was successfully opened as a second location in 1997. Eventually, it became its own entity with Dr. Shope as the sole owner. He continued to serve the Lake Charles, LA, community until he passed away in 2015.

In 2018 Dr. Ted Shope’s youngest daughter, Dr. Darby Shope, graduated from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine and became owner and a mixed animal veterinarian at Bayou South. Bayou South continued to be a family-run business, until June of 2021. In June the Shopes’ made the family decision to sell Bayou South to local veterinarian Dr. Adam McMahan. Dr. Darby now practices veterinary medicine in Gainesville, Texas and Klancy Shope Leoanrd remains an office manager at Bayou South.

Dr. Adam McMahan was born and raised in Conway, Arkansas. He and his wife, Kristin, moved to Baton Rouge where Dr. McMahan attended Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine. Upon completing vet school in 2016, Dr. McMahan and Kristin have made Lake Charles their new home and have grown their family with the addition of two children. As current owner, Dr. McMahan is passionate about continuing to serve both the longtime loyal clients and newcomers to Bayou South.
